Katsina And The Looming War on Banditry. -by Januarius Louis Eze

In the past few weeks, the Katsina state governor, Governor Aminu Bello Masari, along side other states governors announced measures to curb the incessant killings and kidnappings by bandits terrorizing the regions, one of these measures is the launching of a major offensive in their camps within forests linking these states.

For few years now, Nigeria and terrorism goes hand in hand in the morning daily’s, as no day goes by without some sort of news about terrorists activities which is sad really because it’s almost as though life is meaningless at this point and the numbers (no matter how high it may seem), does not move people anymore, people live in constant fear within the Nigerian territory because of this sect.

However, the northern states have been more affected by these people, states like Katsina, kaduna, Zamfara, Jos, Benue, Sokoto, etc, have been major hubs for attacks and killings by these terrorists who somehow are called bandits, victims who eventually survive from this attacks end up being displaced, and with how the system is set up, they end up in the streets with no reliable means of surviving to fall back on, their lives remains at constant risk as they continue to wallow in endless suffering with almost no hope, it’s really a sad situation.

No more amnesty for bandits in Zamfara: Gov. Matawalle

Few days ago, Governors from some this affected states announced measures that would help curb and hopefully put an end to this mess, The katsina state governor in particular announced that the residents of katsina should defend themselves against the bandits, now the big question is, how is this even possible?, aside the fact that the Nigerian state prohibits its citizens from owning firearms and other related weapons, it’s also seems like the governor has given up on his responsibility to protect lives and properties in the his state. This order has been proven futile even from its inception as these individuals that kill and kidnap people carry out this activity with major weaponry that they are not scared to use because they’ve attained some level of training while the average katsina resident might not even know how to operate a glock 99mm, still a sad predicament as it’s almost as if it’s a hydra with so many heads as well, too many factions with similar form of attacks.

Even though the Nigerian Army have been announcing some major winnings lately (which we pray it continues), I really think the Katsina state government can do more to restore peace in the state, The order to just execute the bandits wouldn’t just stop them from still coming to attack innocent civilians, it has been proven time and time again that they’ll keep coming, instead I think everyone needs to come to the table and state their grievances and hopefully find a way around it to stop the killings.
