SKILL GAP: NIGERIAN TELECOM SECTOR APPROACHING DIM

I recent times, the Nigerian telecommunications industry has grown in leaps and bounds. The industry has captivate $75.6 billion it has contributed as much as 15 percent to the Gross domestic progression, GDP of Nigeria. Infrastructure services and digital assets have flourished tremendously, as well as the number of users and subscribers that now depend on them.

However, the digital future of the Nigeria’s telecom industry appears dim if nothing is done to groom and recruit technology talents in Nigeria.

Engineer Gbenga Adedayo, the chairman of the association of licensed telecoms operators of Nigeria, raised an alarm that Nigeria is loosing the brightest and best hands in the industry. He proceed, we are loosing alot of our best to other countries,but you can’t blame the people, because as a country we have not been able to provide enough social guarantees that will keep this young ones here.

In addition, convener of Policy Commission Assisted Forum, PIAF Omobayo Azeez, who delivered a paper on indigenous telecoms sector in the same event said while the sector is growing geometric progression, the same thing cannot be said of its workforce and the talent pool behind it. He added, many factors are responsible for the current skill and capacity gap challenges in the IT and telecoms sector in Nigeria, part of it are too much emphasis on degree rather than skill.

HUK BULLDOGS SET OUT FOR MORNING TRAINING

The Basketball team of Hassan Usman katsina polytechnic known as HUK BULLDOGS come out in massive to attain morning training, as the strike hinders student to attend lectures.

Basketball has been one of the sport view around the world, it is a sport that involves two teams of five active players each trying to score points against one another by throwing a ball through a 300 CM (10feet) high poop.

One of our correspondent Hope Michael, interview some of the basketball players.

One of the prayer Isaac Ayomide, reveals that on Wednesday is not usually their day of training,but they just utilise the day exercise and build up their team since the strike hinders them to attend normal lectures.

Furthermore,the Captain of the Huk Bulldogs team, Jane Okonkwo, stated that, she have been playing basketball for a very long time, so she decided to join Huk Bulldogs for the love of the game,since her national Diploma days, before she is now made the captain of the team.

She added that, the game has been fun and the team has been growing. In her statement “I wish there will be a set match between huk Bulldogs and federal college of educate kastina basketball team, so as to make Huk proud”.

THEATRE COMMAND OPHK ORGANIZES A TWO- DAY WORKSHOP ON COUNTER-IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE

The Theatre Commander (TC) Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) Major General Gold Chibuisi has Charged officers and troops in the Theatre to exhibit high level of proficiency and professionallism in the Counter Improvised Explosive Devised effort of OPHK In all aspect of the ongoing Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency operations in the NE.

Major General Gold Chibuisi represented by the Theatre Training Officer (TTO) Brig Gen SJA Ilori gave the charge while declaring open a two-day workshop organized on Counter – Improvised Explosive Device held at the Theater Training School (TTS) in Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maiduguri.

In his opening remarks, the Theatre Commander OPHK stated that the workshop is organized for Subalterns and non-commissioned Officers drawn from units and formations within the North East Theatre of Operation.

General Chibuisi further disclosed that the workshop is organized in line with the COAS Command Philosophy which is, ” To Transform the NA into a well-trained, equiped and highly motivated Force towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment”. He added that the workshop is to bring participants up to speed and keep them abreast with the current techniques employed by the terrorist in IED tactics.

Additionally, General Gold Chibuisi pointed out that the knowledge gained from the workshop would improve the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device strategy of OPHK and also enhanced the proficiency of troops in the discharge of their duties.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the coordinator of the workshop Commander 47 Engineer Brigade, Brig Gen KO Ukandu stated that the workshop will exposed participants in recognizing terrorists IED, ground signs as well as actions to be taken on detection of an IED.

Present during the opening ceremony were the Chief of Staff Headquarters Theatre Command Brig Gen A Idris, Theatre intelligence coordinator Brig Gen B Sarki and other Principal Staff Officers of Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division as well as the participants.

NAFDAC WARNS AGAINST CONSUMPTION OF CHEMICAL RIPEN FRUITS

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has issued stern warning to all Nigerians against consumption of chemically ripened fruits.

The agency also described sub-standard drug hawkers as merchants of death and warned the public against patronizing such items from the market to prevent the risk of taking contaminated, substandard, expired and adulterated food or drugs.


The Director General, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning while flagging off the one-day North Central Zone NAFDAC Media Sensitization Workshop on Dangers of Drug Hawking and Ripening of Fruits with Calcium Carbide in Nasarawa State. The event was organized for Association of Nigerian Health Journalists yesterday in Lafia, Nasarawa State Capital.

HAJJ WILL BE STOPPED 45 DAYS BEFORE ARAFAT

The Chairman National Hajj Commission of Nigeria NAHCON Alhaji Zikrullah Kunle Hassan has stated that issuance of Visa for the next year’s hajj will be stopped 45 days before Arafat.
 

The Chairman said this during a review meeting for the first time since the conclusion of 2023 Hajj with Executive chairmen of states, Agencies and tour operators yesterday in Abuja.

 
Alhaji Hassan said this is in accordance with the new Saudi Arabia policy in order to have the exact records of the pilgrim who will be performing Hajj for the year.
 

Other items reviewed at the meeting according to the chairman, was the issue of poor feeding, tent scarcity and poor sanitary condition at the Musha’ir during the past hajj and that the commission, is doing everything possible to retrieve the money from the service providers to pay back to the pilgrims.

Alhaji Zikrullah also commented on the exchange rate and how it will affect the intending pilgrims, noting that the hajj fare will rise.

EFFECT OF THE 2DAYS STRIKE ON THE STUDENTS

In compliance to the revolution of the National Executive Council meeting of Nigeria Labour Congress which took place on the 31st of August 2023, there academic staff union of polytechnic also order all the institutions under the union to comply and withdraw service for a two days warning strikes.

However, the student are also affected by the two days warning strike one of our correspondent Khadija Abdulfatai interviewed some student of Hassan Usman Kastina Polytechnic on their option of the strike.

According to Abubakar Yusuf stated that the strike have been useful in many ways that he have been able to finish up his assignment and make some necessary research online.

In addition,Faith Omale also stated that the strike has positive and negative impact on the student, the positive is that the student that have thing to do like notes and assignment that have been issued by the department will tend use the two days for that, while the negative is the issue of the lectures that have been cancelled base on the strike ,those lectures that have been missed aim to been covered by the lecturer so she personally think the strike is 50/50.

Also according to Adepoju Adebayo stated that they have some topics they should have cover over the two days but due to the strike is not possible.

Zainab abu also mention that the strike have really affected the student in a bad way because we the student have been reluctant and lazy over the two days which they are suppose to be in lecture room.
